Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of three trial trenches, was undertaken prior to the proposed redevelopment of the site. The earliest remains identified on the site related to brickmaking, perhaps in structures known as clamps, and quarrying of brickearth. In trench 1 the brickmaking seemed to date no earlier than the 17th century, probably later. In trench 2 two brickearth quarry pits were probably post-medieval-19th century in date. Brickmaking and quarrying were widespread in London and elsewhere, and as such the archaeological significance of these remains was low. Other non-modern structures consisted of intercutting cellars dating to the 18-19th centuries. Any archaeological deposits in trench 3 had been removed by modern intrusions. [Au(abr)] |
