Abstract: |
The assessment of historical and archaeological material indicated that the site was located in an area of high archaeological potential. The sources examined suggested that Wapping was a developing settlement and, by the mid-17th century onwards, had become a substantial and well-established area reliant upon its close proximity to the Thames. The name of the area gave some indication of a Saxon settlement in the vicinity but the focus of this settlement was more likely to have been near the historic core of Wapping which was some 500m downstream. It appeared, from the available sources, that the site could yield some archaeological deposits of late/post-medieval date. These were most likely to take the form of structural remains and associated features such as rubbish pits, as the cartographic evidence indicated that the site was developed from at least the 17th century.
