Abstract:
An archaeological excavation was undertaken following a previous evaluation. A single area of the site within the car park was opened and the excavation encountered evidence for prehistoric and Anglo-Scandinavian activity. This was in the form of occasional worked flint or pottery, although no features of these early dates were excavated. A 12th century boundary ditch which was replaced slightly to the south in the mid to late 14th century was also recorded. The second ditch contained domestic material in the form of pottery and animal bone, the upper fills also contained evidence to indicate that these craft activities had been taking place within the confines of the trench they were likely to have been carried out in the vicinity. Several pits of late medieval date containing domestic refuse, were excavated within the trench. The boundary ditches were still present in the post-medieval period with a slightly different alignment, the area appeared to have been occupied by open agricultural or horticultural land then after.
