Abstract: |
Excavation across the line of the original Brunton and Shields Railway has shown that the original wagonway was excavated along the entire length investigated. No remains of sleepers or rails were found, but the remains of the track bed comprised carefully laid ballast layers of slag, shale and coal, while the cutting had shallow drainage ditches running along its northern and southern sides. The remains of a later track, using individual stone sleeper blocks, was also excavated and several stone sleeper blocks, probably used in this track, were recovered and reused in later features. This track probably corresponded with the relaying of the line in 1839, as described in company documents. [Au(abr)] |
