Abstract: |
An intrusive archaeological evaluation of the proposed park and ride site at Petersfinger comprised the excavation of seven trenches. Six were excavated in the northern field and comprised a 2% sample of the area. One was excavated in the southern field where limited soil disturbance was anticipated. Two areas of interest were identified in the north field. At the extreme east end a concentration of subsoil features and deposits included artefacts principally of Neolithic and Early Bronze Age date; several sherds of Saxon pottery were also recovered. The second area of interest was at the extreme north end of the field, close to the modern railway bridge and comprised a ditch containing a single sherd of Saxon pottery. These results may have indicated that further prehistoric or Saxon settlement features existed within the application area. There was no evidence to suggest that the Anglo-Saxon cemetery discovered to the north of the site in the nineteenth century extended into the present site boundaries. [Au(abr)] |
