Abstract: |
An area 31m by 10 m was excavated and an archaeological watching brief undertaken prior to the construction of the proposed accomodation block. The site lay within the inner (or laybrother's) court of the London Charterhouse, a manastery of considerable significance as one of only three Carthusian urban foundations in England. Two major phases of monastic construction were excavated, together with associated external surfaces, pits, dumps and well preserved assemblages of artefactural and environmental material. There was evidence that the western precinct was altered on at least two occasions. Following the dissolution, the monastic buildings were reused, and a new range constructed in brick. These appeared to have been service buildings in the yard of the mansion created on the site after 1545, one room seemed to have been a smithy. Early in the 17th century, the buildings were substantially rebuilt - probably as a result of the creation of accomodation for the 'poor brothers' of Sutton's Hospital, which was founded in 1614.
