Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment and trial trench evaluation was undertaken in advance of the residential redevelopment of the site. The assessment found that the site lay outside of the nucleus of the medieval settlement, but close to the course of the river Nene, which was probably artificially cut across the parish to improve fenland drainage, probably in the 10th century. The site appeared to have remained unoccupied in the historical period until the 17th century, when parts of the land were allotted and settlement began along the embanked course of West End. By the mid-19th century the area had been subdivided along its existing course and concerted development begun. The evaluation revealed sparse archaeological features at the northern end of the site, with the remains of a small post-medieval ditch, a possible 18th or 19th century brick culvert and field drains. One trench contained a pit with a large sherd of 17th century Bellarmine in its back-fill. [Au(abr)] |
