| Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development which lay between two Scheduled Ancient Monuments, a Roman villa complex and a Roman fort. An evaluation on part of the site in 1987 had revealed Mesolithic deposits containing flints, a Roman ditch, evidence of ridge and furrow cultivation and patterns of field drainage. During the 1996 evaluation, a black silty deposit corresponding with the Mesolithic deposits was observed, although no further flints were found. Probable remnants of ridge and furrow and linear features of probable Romano-British date were also recorded. Roman and post-medieval pottery and a single medieval sherd were recovered. [AIP] |
