Abstract: |
The site lay outside of the historic bounds of the former line of Roman Ermine and included an area of the Roman cemetery. In the medieval period the southern part of the site lay within the Bisopgate Without ward and the northern part, Norton Fall Gate. To the east lay the Bishopgate Bars and the priory and Hospital of St Mary Spital founded in 1197. Domestic occupation on the site continued from the mid 16th century uninterupted until the demolition of buildings on the western side to make way for a rail extension into Liverpool Street Station in the late 1860's. It was recommended that excavation and recording of deposits should take place prior to their removal during groundworks. [Au(adp)] |
