Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site prior to the submission of an application for planning permission for the refurbishment of the present building. The southern part of the site was liable to be located over or close to the line of the Saxon waterfront. The central part of the site was located close to the line of the medieval and post-medieval waterfronts. Garden soils or features may have been present in the northern half of the site. The archaeological potential for pre-Roman artefacts and structures being recovered at the site was considered to be low. Features of Middle Saxon, medieval and post-medieval were likely to be present at the site. The archaeo-environmetal potential at the site was thought to be moderate. Further works in the form of field evaluations were recommended. [Au(adp)] |
