Abstract: |
An additional trench was excavated as part of an evaluation at the proposed site of a relief road within medieval Crawley, following the acquisition of further land. Medieval iron-working deposits had been recorded in the area. During excavation of the additional trench, an undated pit containing iron-rich 'granules' and pieces of iron slag was revealed. Two pits and a shallow pit or scoop containing medieval pottery were recorded; the former also contained iron slag. It was concluded that three of the features could have been of domestic origin, and that the iron-rich fill of the undated pit appeared to be a by-product associated with iron-working in the near vicinity.
