Abstract:
An evaluation involving the excavation of two test-pits was carried out at the proposed site of a retail development, which lay within an area thought to have potential for features relating to use as a medieval burgage plot, or for the remains of medieval and post-medieval wharves or mooring points. The test-pitting revealed 18th century deposits of made ground with a depth of about 2m, which directly overlay geological deposits. Onlly one feature, an 18th or 19th century drain, was recorded, and all artefacts were of a post-medieval or modern date. It was concluded that any disturbance to a depth of 2m relating to the proposed development would be unlikely to encounter archaeologically significant remains, although any deeper disturbance would encounter alluvial and peat deposits, which could contain palaeo-environmental information.
