Abstract: |
The assessment site lay within an area of high archaeological potential. Little was known of the origins of settlement at Fordingbridge and accurate locations for the two Domesday Vills, Forde and Nether Burgate had not been determined. The field was used as pasture in 1842 and may have been in predominantly agricultural use in earlier centuries. From c.1868, however, the southern half of the field had been used as a timber and/or builder's yard and here the earth had been considerably disturbed in this century which may have badly damaged any shallow archaeological deposits. However, the geological base was alluvium and river terrace grovels and deep excavation might yield prehistoric artefacts, which had been covered by alluvium since their deposition. [Au(abr)] |
