Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment of a row of buildings subject to extensive remodelling and renovation works was undertaken. The buildings, all Grade II Listed, were derelict and unoccupied with the exception of The Shakespeare Inn. Documentary evidence suggested that the assessment area had been occupied from at least the 13th century and probably earlier, forming part of the development of the medieval suburb of Temple Fee. Exavation on the site in 1974 supported this documentary evidence and despite post-medieval construction, indicated a potentially high degree of survival for archaeological deposits within the remainder of the assessment area. No inspection of the buildings on the site was possible due to their serious state of decay and therefore the extent of cellaring within the buildings was not recorded. The lack of physical information obtained about these buildings was compounded by the sparse available documenation concerning the buildings. [AIP] |
