Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken on conversion work on the Garden Stairs building at Durham Castle. No walls were exposed to the original stonework but a number of ancient wooden beams were uncovered. At Low Tower, which attaches to the Garden Stairs building, a void was known to exist under the floor. Since the conversion work would involve the removal of the floorboards over this space, the work was archaeologically monitored. Investigation revealed an oblong shaft approximately 5.5m deep, pottery from the fill dated to the 17th century. It was considered a possibility that this was an oubliette: a shaft into which prisoners were placed for periods of solitary confinement. [Au(abr)] |
