Abstract: |
The assessment found that the terraces of the river Nene had formed a major route of communication and settlement since prehistoric times. Localised near to the fen edge, the site was characterised by the extensive remains of a small Roman town at Water Newton, which had achieved economic and political prominence by the late Roman period. The countryside, heavily populated and exploited by both industrial activity and villa economies by the 4th century was the scene of extensive Anglo-Saxon penetration and infiltration in the 5th and 6th centuries. Remains of both settlement and wealthy cemeteries of a similar nature to the Alwalton site were recorded along the margins of the river. After the foundation of a monastery at Peterborough in the 7th century, much of the local landscape became attached to the domains of the abbey, and, apart from the upheavals associated with the Vikings during the 9th and 10th centuries remained in monastic ownership until the Dissolution in the 16th century. Alwalton possessed an important mid-10th century charter, delineating a grant of land to the abbey. [Au] |
