Abstract:
The watching brief revealed an extensive make up deposit within the north-western corner of the nave, which was associated with a late 17th century restoration of the church. Disturbance of earlier deposits during this restoration was evidence by the presence of upturned stone coffin lids and residual finds of medieval pottery and glazed floor tiles. The external monitoring located a similarly disturbed post-medieval graveyard soil that contained occasional fragments of disarticulated human bone, while the lower levels of the 14th century walls of the South Porch were also exposed by the groundwork. Finds retrieved during the internal investigations included 17th century pottery, clay pipe stems and window glazing lead as well as residual medieval pottery and glazed floor tiles. The external monitoring yielded a very mixed assemblage that included post-medieval pottery and window glass and medieval glazed floor tiles. [Au(abr)]
