Abstract: |
an excavation was undterkan on the site of a medieval priory in advance of the construction of a flood defence wall. The earliest dated activity on the site, on the basis of coin and pottery evidence, was associated with a possible forge or smithy of probable 13th/14/ century date which probablycontinued in use up until the 16th century. An extensive cobbbled surface adjacent to the forge and a later phase of hearth construction could be dated to the post-Dissolution period. At the far eastern end of the trench a tiled hearth was date by thermoremanent magnetism (TRM) to the mid-16th century AD - a date consistent with the abandonment of the abbey at the time of the Dissolution.
