Abstract:
An evaluation was undertaken in the yard of 4 Hill House, Market Hill, Hedon. The stratigraphic sequence of layers and features recorded in the evaluation trench indicated evidence of medieval and post-medieval activity on the site. Principal amongst the deposits was a large ditch which contained a mixture of medieval and post-medieval pottery, and which ran parallel to the street frontage before turning eastwards across the area of the proposed development. The ditch may have been associated with a possible moat or earthwork shown in the area of Market Hill on a 17th century map of the town. Further away from the street frontage several pits of possible medieval and post-medieval date were recorded and pointed to continuing industrial or domestic activity within the vicinity of the site. The site's significance was strengthened by the fact that previous investigations had been concentrated within the planned medieval town with little work being undertaken to the north of St. Augustine's church. It was considered that features of archaeological significance were likely to be affected by the development, and a watching brief was recommended. [Au(abr)]
