Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a housing development. The site was well-documented from the mid-18th century, when it had been used for ship-building and repair, although commercial/industrial use may already have been well-established by 1746. During the evaluation, brick and stone walls with floors of brick or poured concrete were recorded in the two trenches excavated. At least three buildings were represented in Trench 2. No direct archaeological evidence for any specific activity was recovered during the fieldwork, but indirect evidence in the form of slags suggested that copper and iron-working had taken place. A water supply system, apparently feeding a large tank, suggested the manufacture of engineering items. Pottery and other artefacts indicated activity on the site from the 17th century until the present day. It was concluded that further excavation would be necessary prior to development. [Au(adp)] |
