Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a trench for a water pipe to service a new bungalow. The pipeline crossed the line of a backfilled medieval moat which was related to the long-destroyed fortified house of the earls of Derby, and which had been identified during an earlier evaluation. The excavated trench extended into the internal moat platform by a distance of c. 12m, but failed to expose any features which could have been related to the late medieval house. However, a drain and a brickwork feature which almost certainly related to the 18th century house were recorded. A fragment of clay pipe stem, a sherd of probable 18th century pottery, a small fragment of window glass and two large blocks of red sandstone were recovered from the fill of the moat. One of the blocks was moulded. This limited artefactual evidence suggested an early 18th century backfill date for the moat. [AIP]
