Abstract: |
Aerial photographs led to accurate mapping of archaeological features within the study corridor. Pre-medieval evidence were shown to be dense on the Welland Gravels, including one causewayed enclosure and a number of settlement enclosures associated with, or adjacent to, field systems. Alignments of some of the fields suggested they pre-dated Car Dyke. The other dense area of early occupation was the Nene gravels in the southern part of the corridor. Most of these features were now below modern Peterborough. Medieval use of the area was evident in the now levelled traces of ridge and furrow cultivation. This probably extended over most of the area mapped, but was now best seen on the higher ground. One site, probably of recent military origin, had been mapped on the Northeast side of Peterborough.
