Abstract: |
Twenty geotechnical trial pits were observed in the area of the Commonhead Junction, the central reservation and embankments to the north and south, in order that the survival of the archaeological deposits across the area could be assessed. The level of the land had been considerably altered across the study area, to the north the ground within the central reservation has been raised up by several metres, whilst around the roundabout and to the west of the southern carriageway it has been greatly reduced. It appears that only the southern part of the study area, within the central reservation, still retained its historic land level, and within trial pit 3 an undated north-south ditch partially covered by a metalled surface may have indicated either the partial preservation of the Roman road, or the later Turnpike road.
