Abstract:
The excavation, building recording and a watching brief were carried out in response to the renovation and extension of the building for conversion into the new premises of the museum. Stratford Park House was constructed during the 17th century, and survey had identified at least three major phases of extension and rebuilding. Excavation of the footprint of the proposed extension revealed structural remains of a series of outbuildings in the southern part of the site. Iron Age pottery and worked flint were recovered from the colluvium on which the post-medieval buildings were constructed. Evidence of the architectural history of Stratford Park House was recorded where revealed during renovation. A detailed drawn and photographic record was made of surviving walls outside the house that were affected by the development. Watching briefs were carried out during the excavation of service trenches and other intrusive groundworks. [Au(abr)]
