Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed residential development site identified that Mesolithic flints, Late Bronze Age and Iron Age artefacts and Roman pottery had been recorded in the vicinity, and that the projected line of a Roman road passed through the area. Documentary evidence indicated that the surrounding area had been extensively settled during the 5th and 6th centuries AD. Although the proposal site lay within an area of archaeological potential, clay extraction during the 19th century had effectively removed any deposits of archaeological interest. It was concluded that no further work would be necessary. [AIP] |
