Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a hotel, which lay within an Area of Archaeological Significance, in the floodplain of the (now canalised) River Roding, and was situated close to the site of medieval Barking Abbey, a SAM. No structures were exposed during the evaluation, nor features or artefacts, other than a 2.26m axe-hewn length of a slow-grown, potentially Bronze Age, wildwood oak which lay within a peat deposit. It was concluded that the lack of significant archaeological remains meant that further work would probably not be required at the site. [AIP] |
