Abstract:
An evaluation and watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of 20 engineering test pits and 3 archaeological test pits, and two archaeological evaluation trenches were excavated. These revealed that the natural deposits and topography of the site had been severely truncated by the present building. Of particular interest, however, was the survival of an area of brickearth in the south-east of the site, which was covered by a thin layer of silt containing pieces of prehistoric burnt flint and a single piece of struck flint. This layer was truncated by a shallow depression containing large quantities of burnt flint, and a prehistoric gully and post holes. There was insufficient struck flint to give a more refined date for this sequence of prehistoric activity, though the large quantities of burnt flint were suggestive of a Bronze Age date. It could at least be said that there was fairly large-scale food preparation, possible flint working and possibly some structures present on the site. No other archaeological strata were revealed during the course of the watching brief elsewhere on the site and the prehistoric activity had also been truncated, so that it only survived within the area of the tennis court.
