Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken to monitor a geotechnical survey of the site. A provisional reconstruction of the contours on site appeared to show the existence of a gravel island with a foreshore area to the north. Above the gravel a thick series of alluvial deposits appeared to cover most of the site. Dating evidence from the upper alluvial layers showed that the latest deposits were lain down in the 19th century. Of importance was the likelihood that the gravel island seen in the centre of the site remained a high point, probably clear of flooding until fairly recently. In addition, in the northern area of the site, a layer of potential brickearth was recorded, possibly representing the edge of the river terrace on this site. Thick post-medieval reclamation dumps covered the alluvium. Some layers contained stoneware jars and were clearly of 19th century date. In the lane running along the east side of Corporation Yard walls possibly associated with the 19th century soap works were found. The complexity of the alluvial layers was clear with cartographic evidence showing the site was mostly open until very recently. It was likely that the site contained valuable environmental information in the waterlogged alluvial layers and the gravel island may have attracted prehistoric (and other periods) settlement or activity.
