Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken on four test pits excavated in advance of rebuilding works, and were positioned on the advice of the structural engineers. A faculty for the investigative work had been issued, requiring archaeological monitoring of the test pits. One test pit inside the clergy vestry revealed the mortared chalk foundations of the adjoining south aisle of the medieval church, cut into graveyard soils. Two test pits revealed the brick and cement foundations of the 19th century clergy-vestry, cut into similar graveyard soils, and one test pit was abandoned at ground level. The oldest part of the church was dated to the late 12th century, although the church may have originated earlier. The date of construction of the south aisle was not known, but it was thought that the aisles of the church were rebuilt in the 15th century. [Au(abr)] |
