Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation involved the excavation and recording of two trial pits. Pit one was located towards the centre of a fairly steep west-facing slope and contained a layer of colluvial material, with the artefact evidence indicating a likely 17th-18th century date for its formation. Trial pit 2 was located towards the base of the slope, and contained a deep cutting, seemingly where the former ground surface was cut away and a verge incorporated adjacent to and level with Church Hill road. Modern finds recovered suggested a fairly recent date for this. The trial pits failed to reveal the presence of archaeological deposits, but the post-medieval pottery and some worked flint recovered indicated possible activity upslope of the proposed development.
