Abstract: |
The assessment identified that the site lay adjacent to a mill building from 1771. This mill may have been owned by Geoffrey the Clerk of Stratton in the early 13th century and received its water from a spring called Letherwell. One course of the stream from this spring might be represented by a channel , which has been shown to run across the assessment area during the 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1830 Joseph Cripps is described as "of Stratton Mill" which may refer to the site, though map evidence labeled it as Parsons Mill or Corn Mill. A canalised course of the river Churn, that acted as the mill leat, was infilled after 1925. The remains of late 19th and early 20th century buildings were also recorded as lying under the present day concrete. [Au(adp)] |
