Abstract: |
The study identified a considerable amount of evidence of archaeological activity both in the general area, as well as directly within the study area itself. Recent fieldwalking suggested that there was prehistoric activity. In addition, there was a number of Roman stray finds, a possible Roman building to the north and two Roman burials to the east (it was thought possible that the cemetery extended into Zone E). A field to the east of Heslington parish church was the site of a tithe barn which originated in the medieval period and continued in use to the mid-19th century. The entire study area lay within the Heslington Conservation Area, which was focussed on Heslington Hall and provided a critical visual setting for both the hall and parish church. [Au(adp)] |
