Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation comprising desktop assessment and trial trenching was carried out on a site proposed for residential development. The eastern edge of Shadingfield Common crosses the proposed development site. Medieval settlements were often located along the edges of commons, which suggested that there was the potential for medieval remains being located within the development area. The desk-based assessment showed little change other than enclosure of the common in the 19th century and some alteration of boundaries in the 20th century. The field evaluation was only concerned with that area of the development site which formed part of the common itself; no evidence for any activities which would leave evidence within the archaeological record was identified.
