Abstract: |
The study identified a total of 30 archaeological and historic sites within 250m of the proposed route. The southern part of a Registered Battlefield site, (Battle of Stamford Bridge, 1066) is crossed over the last kilometre of the proposed route. There were no Scheduled Monuments or Listed Buildings identified in the study area. A high level of archaeological activity was recorded, these included a possible barrow cemetery or Iron Age settlement site, a second Iron Age square barrow cemetery with associated Romano-British cremation inhumations, LBA and IA enclosures and field systems, medieval field boundaries, ridge and furrow and further Romano-British settlement, including Roman roads. Ten of these sites were identified as under threat. [Au(adp)] |
