Abstract:
The proposed development was to consist of an extension to the western end of the main building at Storey Primary School. A school building currently occupied part of the site and the proposed new building would be located within its grounds. The site was located in an area of palaeoenvironmental, archaeological and historical significance. The site itself was part of the Archaeological Priority Area as defined in the London Borough of Newham's Unitary Development Plan. There was a high potential for palaeoenvironmental remains, a moderate potential for prehistoric and Roman remains, and a low to moderate potential for Saxon, medieval and post-medieval remains. Cartographic evidence showed that the site was part of Trinity Marsh, and was used as pastureland until the mid 19th century. The site then lay vacant until the mid 20th century when a rectangular structure - part of Storey Primary School - was built. This structure was still standing. Archaeological deposits therefore may have suffered some previous impact in the areas of the current building's foundations, and in other localised areas. [Au(abr)]
