Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment and a rapid non-intrusive field survey was undertaken of the site prior to the proposed redevelopment of the ruins of a Elizabethen Manor House which was contained within the English Heritage Register of Buildings at Risk and was a Grade II Listed Building. The structure was itself a Scheduled Ancient Monument and was located within the area of the Deserted Settlement of Hampton Gay which was also a SAM. The proposed redevelopment would have had a partial affect upon some aspects of the Scheduled remains of the Deserted Medieval VIllage and the gardens of the 16th century and later manor house. This impact would be greatest within the area to the south-west which, the site survey suggested, contained extant settlement earthworks associated with the village. The development would have also affected some other features identiifed during the site survey: these were primarily post-medieval (probably 19th century) garden features. [Au(adp)]
