Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed redevelopment of the site, which lay partly within an Area of Archaeological Value and contained a number of Listed Buildings. It was likely that until the early 13th century the site was predominantly uncultivated, cultivated or pasture land. From 1207, the site formed part of the newly created borough of Leeds. The survival potential of archaeological remains from the prehistoric to the early post-medieval periods was limited. Previous archaeological work on the north of the site had demonstrated that truncated rubbish pits and evidence for burggage plots survived from the medieval and early post-medieval periods. The southern part of the site, appeared to have been intensively developed at a later date than the area fronting onto Briggate. Houses were probably present here from at least the 16th century onwards and the Holy Trinity Church was erected in the 1720s. Cartographic evidence demonstrated that only the area to the north of the church remained unbasemented, this was conformed by geotechnical investigations, which revealed disturbance and truncation of deposits below the concrete basement slab. Further mitigation in the form might have allowed a better understanding of the ground conditions, the nature, depth and quality of survival of any archaeological remains. [Au(adp)] |
