Abstract: |
An evaluation was undertaken in advance of a proposed residential development. Two trenches were excavated close to the northern and southern limits of the site. They revealed the presence of ditches and pits dated from the 12th to the 14th century. The partial remains of a structure, possibly a cottage, dated from the late 18th or early 19th century and the deposition of 'night soil' in the later 19th to the early 20th century. Following the evaluation a programme of observation, investigation and recording was implemented during the groundworks for the development. Although no further features were identified, two deposits; a layer of grey-brown silt that sealed the medieval features and the 'night soil' deposits were shown to extend over much of the site.
