Abstract: |
The archaeological programme consisted of the excavation and recording of fifteen archaeological test pits. Three palaeochannels were sealed by a "hill wash" deposit. A number of prehistoric linear features including a possible ring ditch were recorded cutting this deposit and a smaller number of post-medieval agricultural features likewise cut into it. These features were sealed by a post-medieval plough soil, which was in turn, overlain by layers of made ground associated with the construction of an iron church and its replacement built of brick. Two features were identified as possibly being associated with the iron church while a series of walls (internal and external), supports for floors, floor surfaces themselves and sewers were recorded as belonging to the brick church.
