Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken, which identified a high potential for prehistoric activity on the site. To the south some Sites and Areas of High Archaeological Potential had been noted, including a Bronze Age burial surrounded by a ring ditch and to the north a Mesolithic and Neolithic site, with Mesolithic axes found to the east. The proposed development consisted of an extension to be built on the northern side of the present supermarket. It appeared that the foundations for this would remove any surviving archaeological features on the site. However, previous works such as a quarry pit dug on the site in the 1900s, previous industrial buildings, the remediation of contaminated soil and the construction of the present car park appeared to have truncated the natural ground surface and this only deep-cut features would survive.
