Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during development groundworks for the construction of a new visitors' centre. Vestry House dated to 1730 when it was originally built as a workhouse. Since then it had also been a police station, a builder's yard, a private house and offices for the nearby church. Two areas were recorded. One was within the footprint of the development where the sides of the foundation trenches were examined. The other was an area exposed in plan by topsoil stripping to the south of the new building and here the deposits were threatened by machine movements during redevelopment. Natural deposits were exposed all along the bases and lower parts of the foundation trenches. They consisted of a hard orange sand with clay silt and occasional gravel at around 35.80m AOD. This was covered by a brickearth subsoil in which was found a small fragment of early post-medieval red earthenware dating to c.1480-1600. Above this was a layer of buried post-medieval earth in which was found a piece of 19th century Creamware. Finally this was sealed by a modern garden earth although in many places this had been completely removed by machining. Three features were recorded in the foundation trenches, two pits and a section of a brick and tile-lined drain. One pit contained a quantity of 19th or 20th century pottery and glass whilst the other, although containing no dateable material, seemed to be from the same period. The drain may have served the houses to the north west of the site and dated to the same period as the pits. The second area contained what appeared to be walls and floors of one of the cottages that stood on the site between c.1840 and 1965. A later pit dug through these features was also recorded in plan.
