Abstract: |
A watching brief was maintained during machine stripping of vegetation and overburden from an area designated for quarrying. A pair of cairns of unknown date, previously noted within the site, were preserved in situ. An earlier surface inspection of the area had been hindered by vegetation, allowing no confidence that significant features had not escaped attention. The only man-made features which had been recognised were the two cairns, a series of trackways, including terrace-ways and hollow-ways, and part of a network of dilapidated stone walls. The method of machine-stripping was not conducive to close inspection of either spoil or the ground surface, and nothing of archaeological interest was observed during the watching brief. [AIP] |
