Abstract: |
A watching brief was maintained during topsoil stripping and excavations for surface drainage and foul-sewer installations during the construction of a bypass. Concentrations of charcoal and possible burnt clay, associated with an assemblage of late prehistoric pottery sherds which were possibly of Late Bronze Age date, were excavated. One of the concentrations of burnt material may have represented the vestigial remains of a hearth or furnace. A limited number of further archaeological features were also revealed, which included shallow pits frequently containing charcoal and small fragments of possibly burnt sandstone. Little dateable material was recovered, but there were no indications that the features were contemporary with the late prehistoric material. There was also no evidence that the charcoal and stone represented in situ burning. [Au(adp)] |
