Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken ahead of proposed development on the site and identified a moderate potential for archaeology. Scattered prehistoric and Roman finds had been found in the region and vicinity of the site, but it appeared unlikely they would be encountered on site. No topographic reason or density of finds indicated a settlement of Saxon or earlier date. The most likely periods of significance were the medieval and post-medieval, due to the site's hinterland position in relation to the settlement of Bromley. Bromley was documented to have existed from at least the 11th century. The site was located to the north of the parish church and to the west of the Market Square, both of which dated to c.13th century. Although cartographic evidence suggested the site was not built over until the late 19th century it probably lay to the rear of medieval and post-medieval tenements that lined the High Street to the east. Features associated with backyards and boundaries may still have survived. Evidence of early field systems directly outside of the village may also have been present. [Au(abr)] |
