Abstract: |
An archaeological impact assessment was undertaken of the site and its immediate vicinity in order to determine the likely archaeological potential of the site, and the likely impact on this by the proposed refurbishment, the relevant component of which was the construction of a new lift-pit. The assessment demonstrated that the site lay within an area of considerable archaeological potential of all periods from Roman to the post-medieval. The basement of the present building would have removed most medieval and post-medieval horizontal stratigraphy but this was unlikely to have affected much of the Roman sequence. It was recommended that any necessary geotechnical pits excavated for engineering purposes be archaeologically monitored for further information on the nature and levels of deposits beneath the basement slab. This would enable an appropriate mitigation strategy to be devised. [Au(adp)] |
