Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken during groundworks for the refurbishment of the market. Finds from the site consisted of a few pieces of a few pieces of 18th/19th-century pottery, mostly from unstratified contexts. No evidence was found in the trenches for any earlier deposits or features. A stone-built well was uncovered on the east side of the site. No firm dating evidence was recovered from the well, although the pieces of brick incorporated into the upper part of the shaft lining suggested that this part of the structure, at least, was probably not earlier that 18th century in date.
