Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in order to meet the requirements of a condition relating to the granting of planning permission. The archaeological evaluation involved the opening of four-machine excavated trenches and observation of some demolition works. The site lay some 100m to the east of the River Rom, whose course lay on the site western side of the modern Rom Valley Road. Prehistoric material found close to the site suggested that it might have been an attractive area for prehistoric settlement. The evaluation found evidence of the ancient, presumably prehistoric, environment but no evidence of any human activities or settlement of any archaeological significance. On the eastern part of the site, deposits of clayey sand were exposed immediately under the concrete slab. These were part of the Taplow Gravels, one of the Thames River Terrace Gravels, and seen immediately below the concrete slabs in Trench 1 and the eastern part of Trench 2. On the western part of the site, immediately under the slab, lay grey and blue very clayey waterlain silts with a high organic content of weeds and roots. These were interpreted as alluvially formed deposits associated with the periodic flooding of the river Rom. These deposits were found in Trenches 3, 4 and the western part of Trench 2. Several areas of the site showed that any archaeological remains would have been heavily truncated by modern foundations. Parts of the site also showed signs of ground contamination in the form of water discoloration from hydrocarbons accompanied by strong petrol smells. [Au(abr)]
