Abstract: |
A desk top assessment of the proposed site of a residential development was undertaken. Mesolithic artefacts and a Bronze Age sword had been found in the nearby River Thames. Excavation at a site on the opposite side of the river had revealed prehistoric and Roman artefacts, substantial medieval buildings and post-medieval deposits. Windsor Castle, a royal residence founded in c. 1070, lay nearby; a settlement had grown up outside the walls from the early 12th century. A 15th century building and one dating from the 16th century remained standing in Eton High Street. It was concluded that an evaluation would be necessary. [AIP] |
