Abstract: |
Archaeological excavation of a number of new post pits in the outer court of Kenilworth Castle, north of Mortimer's Tower, revealed the probable core of a wall, most likely part of the foundations of the tower. A layer of rubble in an adjacent pit probably represents demolition. Most of the pits appear to lie across a former post-civil war trackway that passed through a breach in the wall at this point. As such many of the layers revealed were probably associated with the back-filling of this trackway. A single sherd of 14th/15th century pottery , and several fragments dating from the 16th to 18th centuries were recovered from the post-pits along with a single prehistoric flint tool. [Au(abr)] |
