Abstract:
The assessment site was within an area of archaeological potential as defined within the Unitary Development Plan. The site lay on the edge of Cornhill, immediately to the east of the valley of Walbrook stream. This area was settled at the time of the early foundation of the Roman city, and archaeological sequences recorded on a number of sites in the immediate vicinity provided valuable information of the archaeological development of the area from Roman times to the post-medieval period. The present basement slabs had truncated the main area of the site to a level removing most Saxon and medieval levels, and it was probable that the latest Roman levels would have been totally truncated. Remains of Roman town houses would, however, have almost certainly survived. The Roman remains on the site were also likely to have been extensively disturbed by later pits and foundations. [Au(abr)]
